Don’t Make Assumptions

Posted by on Jun 5, 2015 in Susie's Blog | Comments Off on Don’t Make Assumptions

THE THIRD AGREEMENT from Don Miguel Ruiz¹ Book ³The Four Agreements² is DON¹T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS. We have the tendency to make assumptions about everything. The problem with making assumptions is that we believe they are the truth. We could swear they are real. We make assumptions about what others are doing or thinking ‹ we take it personally ‹ then we blame them and react by sending emotional poison with our word. That is why whenever we make assumptions, we¹re asking for problems. We make an assumption, we misunderstand, we take it personally, and we end up creating a whole big drama for nothing. For example, you are at a party or BBQ and someone you really like walks in, you thought they really liked you too. However, they smiled said hello and moved along. You couldŠnot take it personally or make any assumption and move onŠbut most likely that voice in your head goes from zero to 60 in 2.2 secondsŠand we start with the chatter; Œwow I guess she doesn¹t like me¹ or Œwhat did I do to her¹ – or we can choose NOT to assume anythingŠrealize this is her thing and move on to the next scenario. OrŠyou get home from work and your spouse is cranky and short with youŠyou begin the chatterŠ “oh no! What did I do?² and then begin the vicious cycle of trying to please him/her as all of us as caretakers tend to do! Instead realizeŠthis is none of MY businessŠand allow him/her some space. Your love will not change anyone, although it may seem to soften them up a bitŠpeople only change when they are ready and for themselves. The biggest assumption (in my opinion) is that we assume everyone sees the world and each circumstance the way WE do. We assume they think, feel, and even judge the way we do. This assumption sparks our own internal fear of being ourselves around othersŠwe think they will judge, victimize or blame us; just as we do to ourselves. So before someone has the opportunity to accept or reject us, we have already rejected ourselves. The way to keep from making assumptions is to ask questions. If you don¹t understand, askŠclear communication leads us to the truth. Also, do not be afraid to ask for what you want, for no one but you knows what that request could be. Become aware of your daily/moment by moment habits of assumingŠand in each moment take action toward clarity and...

Don’t take anything personally!

The second of The Four Agreements: Don¹t take anything personally! Information From: Don Miguel Ruiz. ³The Four Agreements.² Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. All people live in their own dream, in their own mind; they are in a completely different world from the one we live in. When we take something personally, we make the assumption that they know what is in our world, and we try to impose our world on their world. Even when a situation seems so personal, even if others insult you directly, it has nothing to do with you. What they say, what they do, and the opinions they give are according to the agreements they have in their own minds. Their point of view comes from all the programming they received throughout their livesŠfamily, education, experienceŠthese all form individual perspectives. When we take things personally; we feel offended or attacked, we get defensive, we make mountains out of molehillsŠthese are all fear responses, based on the need to be Œright¹. Even our own self talk can come from a space of judgement and fear. If we get dressed for our day and think Œdang I look old today¹ and believe itŠthen we tend to live that feeling all day long and our day is not joyous or even pleasantŠand Œold’ is only a perspectiveŠbecause the definition of Œold¹ depends on who you askŠto a small child it is probably 35Šand to a 35 year old it¹s 90! Likewise if someone says to you Œwow you look pretty today¹, it may make you feel good for a while, but that is only one person¹s perspectiveŠand you are hearing it with your perspectiveŠso to allow our happiness to revolve around someone else¹s idea of us keeps us riding a roller coaster of ups and downs. Good or bad, let¹s do our best to give each other their space for Œtheir storyŠor perspective¹ and realize it has NOTHING to do with us! This will alleviate a lot of stress and suffering. When we make this a habit (21 days) we avoid many upsetsŠour anger, jealousy and envy will disappear. A habit I have come to use a lot of the time in place of re-action is ŒThat¹s none of my business¹! When we get wrapped in another person¹s opinion we are just getting on that old roller coaster. How others act or react has nothing to do with us and so it¹s easier to realize that¹s their business not mine! If you keep this agreement, you can travel around the world with your heart completely open and no one can hurt you. You can say, ³I love you,² without fear of being ridiculed or rejected. You can ask for what you need. You can say yes, or you can say no ‹ whatever you choose ‹ without guilt or self-judgment. You can choose to follow your heart always. Blessings to each of you! Let¹s ŒMind our Own Business’ and make this a wonderful...

Love and Light are not just words we use to sound Spiritual. They are a spoken and written energy that we can use to Bless ourselves and others. When we use these words we want to actually feel the love and light of the Divine flowing through us. Each time you use these words, go to your heart chakra (center chest area) and send the vibration from there. If you are not already in the habit of using these words, please give them a try. They are very powerful and can do no harm. Send love and light to every concern and every relationship you have and you will find that much joy is the result. Most of all, feel yourself as Love and Light and watch your world improve....
